About FolkTale

FolkTale is a boutique, micro-winery and meadery, operating in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

FolkTale works in small batches of handcrafted wine and meads, that are crafted using a blend of traditional and modern techniques. We pride ourselves on making meads in a manner that is keeping with the long traditions and history of this fine drink.

We are 100% Australian owned and made, with most of our products sourced from local beekeepers, farmers and businesses.

TONY WICKHAM

Tony was born in Monto Queensland. Growing up with his beekeeper grandfather, Tony enjoyed the sweet taste of honey and honeycomb. Throughout his life Tony had always been passionate about history, as well as brewing, distilling and fermenting from ancient recipes. Since then Tony has been able to continue the family tradition of working in association with beekeepers by fermenting honey and modernising ancient mead recipes. With expertise in quality assurance systems and perfecting the art of wine making, Tony decided to use his skills to make a micro-meadery.

In 2017 Tony started Folktale Meadery after friends asked Tony to make mead for a wedding. The drink became a sensation and guests came back for more.  Since then Folktale Meadery has expanded into FolkTale Pty Ltd, as Tony’s best mate has become a business partner.

RENE GUNTHER

Born in Gaspar, Brazil,  Rene grew up on his grandparent’s dairy farm and corn mill, spending many school holidays working in his family’s business. Studying chemical engineering, and specialising in fermentation processes, Rene’s passion lies in quality assurance and business management.

Honouring his grandfather and grandmother, Rene is driven to use his knowledge and love of grains and fermentation to expand FolkTale into distilling and brewing. And there was no one better to do it with, then with his best friend, Tony Wickham.

FolkTale Pty Ltd - an exciting mead and wine venture

Folktale Meadery barely survived the 2020 pandemic. The lockdowns and inability to travel to local farmers and beekeepers impacted the Meadery greatly. But with the community's support, and a new business partner, Folktale Meadery was able to keep a float and expand into FolkTale Pty Ltd in 2021.

Combining Tony’s and Rene’s expertise in the fermentation of honey, fruits, berries and grains, FolkTale is heading into an exciting new venture of creating new flavours and expanding FolkTale’s selection.

FolkTale is proud of the quality of wine and mead it produces commercially. We have new wine and mead flavours under development to be launched at special events during the year.

We are expanding our liquor licence to produce a wider range of products, including artisanal beers, ciders and spirits.
